3D Graphics and Virtual Reality (Example question 1)

a) There are many different types of Virtual Reality system, the most common of which is termed Desktop VR or Window on World VR. Briefly describe three other types of VR system.

b) Flight simulation systems used in both commercial and military applications are responsible for a large number of advances in the field of virtual reality. Describe a typical flight simulation system and how the use of VR and simulation technology benefits the aviation industry.

c) When working between different 3D graphics or VR packages there are a number of different conventions which you will need to become accustomed to. The most fundamental of these conventions describe the 3D co-ordinate system used in the package. There are three things you should consider when working with a new co-ordinate system, describe each of these and sketch an example set of axes using a particular set of conventions.

d) Briefly describe what is meant by the terms roll, pitch and yaw.

e) By applying roll, pitch and yaw rotations in succession it is possible to rotate a co-ordinate system to any orientation we desire. The figure below shows a rotated co-ordinate system as a small, fat set of axes, with the world co-ordinates shown as the longer, thin set of axes. Calculate the angles needed for the roll, pitch and yaw sequence to orientate the smaller set of axes. Note: this example uses a right-handed convention in all cases. Use XYZ Fixed angles in your answer - not Euler angles.
